Letters from Yuma, Arizona

Never, ever screw-up in front of retired folks.
Crane Truck
My parents are building a small house in Yuma, Arizona. This, like so many former Chicagoans, is where they plan to spend their winters. Their community is full of retirees, so when the developers decided to roll in with some tall palm trees, the community came out to watch the process.

Dena, that would be my mother, decided to bring her camera and take these lovely snaps of the tree besting the crane.
Crane off the ground
I wish she had taken photos of the on-lookers. I wish she had a video camera. This would have been a sweet YouTube video.

I understand the local news came, but didn’t stay long. They got bored. Not those seniors, though. They know good afternoon t.v. when they see it.

OK just to set the record straight, we came upon this after the fact and we actually drove home to get our camera before returning to the scene. It may not be obvious in the pictures, but we were sitting on the edge of a golf course with golf carts driving in front of us on the cart path. All the golfers were “looky loos” as they drove by. Surprising that there wasn’t a golf cart accident. The local TV didn’t even take a picture and there was no mention in the local paper. Too close to the mega sales at the mall the day after Thanksgiving. We plan to take the camera with us in the car whenever we leave the house. You never know what interesting things you will see. Actually, I wish I had it with me when Hattie and I were walking a couple of weeks ago. We came up to a medium sized tarantula walking along the curb. Would have been a cool picture. The crane in the first photo is one of the two they brought to help right the damaged crane. Also, just so you know, this is not the community we live in, but the new golf course subdivision they are building. Way over our budget!! Although it is in the Foothills. I sent the picture to you in reverse order. There were way too many to send all of them, besides, you would just have more fodder to embarrass us.

Don’t feel bad Dena. The kids and I took TONS of pictures of the various pieces of heavy equipment that the military sank down by the border near my mom’s house. I thought I posted about it. Perhaps I didn’t, I’ll have to check. I too know good afternoon television.
