The Great Escape II

The pigs got out again. We were about to sit down to eat dinner when the dogs went nuts because they could see the pigs out the window. Two of the pigs wandered down to the pasture which was convenient. I just sent one of the kids down to close the gate so we could worry about those later while we dealt with the two wandering free. One went over to the neighboring field which is even more full of burrs than our acreage - I’m still itching. The first three pigs were relatively easy to get back into their pen, but the third decided she had struck it rich and didn’t want to leave fresh pasture. Eventually they were all herded back into their pen and the fencing was repaired.

Here is Madeleine helping with fencing:

And a shot of the whole scene:

Both kids were a great help getting the pigs back in. Coleman went back up to the house to take care of the dogs once everything was back under control. Scott got bit while repairing the fencing - pigs like to check everything out with their mouths.

Those darn pigs. They couldn’t escape while the sun was out and it was warmer? Hope the bite is not too bad. Keep it clean, son.

I don’t think it even bruised him. He had a really thick jacket on but he said he “could definitely feel it.”

They were probably just excited about the World Series. You know how pigs like their baseball.

How do they get out? I guess there is more than “oink, oink, oink” going on in those brains of theirs.

They’re really, really big and strong and they push and rub on the fence. Then they root around with their really amazing snouts until they find a weak spot. Then, voila! They are running free.

I thought the pigs were for food…isn’t it time for there to be pig stories like the kind of grotesque chicken stories of blogs past?

Or are they now pets forever to live like Wilbur on the farm? What does Charlotte say???

    Yes. I am conflicted.

You’re conflicted because you’re attached to them now? I can see where that would be very, very hard. That’s why all of my pseudo farm animals are pets. ;)

Although, I have a goat that I’m getting ready to take to the butcher, he’s mean and hurtful to the other goats. Deep down I don’t think I can do it. But really deep down, I still want to.

It’s way easier to accept it when it’s an animal that’s hurting your other animals. For me anyway. I have no regrets about all of the roosters being gone because they were beating the crap out of the poor hens who provide us and a few neighbors with lovely eggs. The pigs though… they’re just nice animals and I’m going to miss having them out back. I worked really hard at not being attached to them but Thursday is still going to be a hard day for me.

YES! That’s totally true. He’s a mean goat. To us…to my dear sweet Nubian that I love…I yell at him constantly when I see him picking on Coal, the friendliest goat EVER.

I’ll think good thoughts for you on Thursday.

    Did Scott tell you yummiest.plum.jam.ever?

I’m glad that you liked the plum jam. Madeleine’s hair is getting really long. I don’t think that it’s been this long since 4th or 5th grade.
