Winter Lethargy or Just Plain Lazy?

I definitely don’t want to mop my disgusting kitchen floor. I definitely don’t want to finish up the laundry with my homemade laundry detergent. I definitely don’t want to go pick up the half dozen or so things that are out laying around the property and should be put in the barn for safe keeping or shovel the front porch or finish painting my living room/kitchen or even go to the grocery store. I’m definitely not feeling very farmgirlish today.

Sounds like SAD: Seasonal affective disorder. I’ve got it BAD.

depression with a fall or winter onset

    lack of energy

decreased interest in work or significant activities

    increased appetite with weight gain

    carbohydrate cravings

    increased sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness

    social withdrawal

afternoon slumps with decreased energy and concentration

    slow, sluggish, lethargic movement

If so, you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. This disorder was identified and publicized in 1993 by Dr. Norman Rosenthal, Director of Seasonal Studies at the National Institute of Mental Health. Researchers estimate that approximately 17% of people living in the upper latitudes suffer periodic bouts of the winter blues. People who meet full diagnostic criteria for SAD in northern climes is estimated at 8%. Only 2% appear to suffer from SAD in the Sun Belt and those individuals probably avoid going outdoors. Women suffer from SAD three to four times more frequently than do men.

    What about anger and hostility?

Isn’t that just normal motherhood during the holidays?

    No?

    Oh, my bad.

Mmmm, you could be right. I’m chalking the most recent anger and hostility up to being a stereotype.

I checked out on of the sun lamp ads that are located on the right side of the screen… I’m afraid I will just have to be S.A.D. all winter long.

    A stereotype of what?

Yeah, they have some sort of light therapy thing at Costco, but it’s $135. I don’t think the Kev-head will go for it, but I guess it depends on how hostile I get. The red wine isn’t having it’s normal affect. Yet another side-effect of S.A.D.

    Bummer.

You know… all the reasons I shouldn’t be president. Like nuking the world because my hormones are out of whack.

    HA! now I get it…

apparently my S.A.D is making me a little slow. Ask your husband about my super-gay projects here at work. It’s lightening my mood quite a bit. :)

How in the heck did you start getting all of those ads for S.A.D. light therapy? Do you do that or are TPTB picking up on our conversation and doing it?

I think that the ads were from a gmail thread I had with Scott’s mom, but I can’t remember now since it’s been so long since I checked my blog stuff.

Actually I just looked and saw that there are ads to the right of the posts on blogger.com, so that must be where I saw them.
